BlindEye begins

Updated: Aug 18, 2019

The story of how we started

The blind eye team started up in October 2017 when a few like minded people decided to work together to help the growing number of people living on the streets of Nottingham. There are already large organization doing their best to tackle this issue from many angles. With limited resources we decided to start a soup run on a Sunday morning, a time of the week when people needed it the most.

There are a large number of people sleeping rough on the streets of Nottingham but there are many more who are homeless but manage to find temporary shelter.

The people we meet are the unfortunate few who were unable to make the shelters or for their own reasons find it easier to sleep on the streets. We don’t judge the people we meet, we simply offer them a hot drink, porridge, snacks and clothing and if they have a dog we offer dog food.

We know their reasons are complex as are the long term solutions and that giving a homeless person some food is not going to solve all their problems. However, sometimes we have to leave the debate about the causes of homelessness and the answers, show some humanity and help people with the problems they have now.

Who knows, the simple act of kindness of giving some food or a blanket could help turn around somebody's life but if it doesn’t it will still help them overcome hunger or cold.

Our team is made up of a small bunch of volunteers who put themselves out to help our cause. Since we started we have been very fortunate to have met some very generous people who have helped build up the items we take out each time. The expenses we have to keep going are minimal but as the work we do grows we are able to offer much more than just hot drinks and snacks. We were fortunate to have received enough donations in winter to take out supply packs that we filled with toothpaste, toothbrushes, fruit, chocolates, hats, scarfs and gloves. In Summer we have been offering cold water and summer clothing. We would like to offer this as often as we can along with the porridge pots that is becoming our signature dish.

We would like to invite you to our Facebook page and follow the work we do. If you have any questions, or you like what you see and want to join us on one of our soup runs, then please message the group and one of our team will be in touch.
